Happy 2011! Caltrain schedule change and fare increase.

Some good and some bad Caltrain news: baby bullet trains on weekends, but fewer trains on weekdays.

Beginning Jan. 1, the Caltrain fare for each zone will increase 25 cents, with multi-ride tickets and passes adjusted accordingly. In addition, four midday trains will be eliminated. The changes were approved by the Caltrain Board of Directors in October to close a $2.3 million gap in the Fiscal Year 2010 operating budget.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2011, Caltrain will introduce weekend Baby Bullet service, a pilot project aimed at increasing revenue and ridership for the rail system.

iCaltrain has been updated to show the new schedule, and the schedule is now color coded to show baby bullet and limited-stop trains.

Dwell time is increased because cyclists are required to wait for all others to board. If cyclists were permitted to board ahead of non-cycling passengers, the walking passengers could move to the other 3 or 4 cars of the train. That option of moving to other cars is *not* available to cyclists when they’re required to wait.

Hence, the dwell time issue can be quickly and easily resolved at no cost and save the $400,000 that Caltrain claims they currently lose annually from dwell time losses.

The dwell time is not due to cyclists; it’s due to a policy that seems unnecessarily wasteful and frustrating.
